Sofia, Rila & the southwest
Use Sofia as a bookend, then choose a separate base if mountain or monastery days are central. Check current access and operator information rather than treating every outing as an automatic day trip.
Bulgaria works best when mountains, historic towns and coast are treated as distinct travel areas. Choose two or three bases with a clear direction, and give slower roads and weather enough room in the plan.
Curated planning covers eight travel regions as a selected core, not an exhaustive inventory or live availability.

Bulgaria's eight travel regions bring together very different journeys: Sofia and nearby mountains, Plovdiv and the Rhodopes, central historic towns, Danube landscapes and the Black Sea. The strongest route chooses one or two themes rather than crossing the country for isolated pins.
A car can make rural bases and mountain areas easier to connect, but secondary and mountain roads deserve conservative planning. Count a scenic transfer as part of the experience and preserve enough time to arrive without a chain of fixed bookings.
These clusters help establish useful bases while leaving the wider country for another trip.

Pair Plovdiv's city time with a mountain base only when you have several nights. Winding roads and landscape stops mean map distance alone is not a useful measure of the day.
Veliko Tarnovo and other central towns can form a cultural route with two or three-night bases. Resist adding both western mountains and the coast unless the trip is long enough.
Valley towns, rose-growing landscapes and mountain edges suit a slower east-west section. Plan a few chosen stops rather than treating the corridor as a single transfer.
Choose a northern or southern coastal base according to arrival and interests. The coast can be a separate trip, particularly when a short inland route would otherwise require a long return drive.
These are EasyRoad's flexible examples, not official itineraries or guaranteed drive times. Current weather, road works, parking and your stops can change the route substantially.
Two or three nights per base gives room for a town day, an outdoor day and a lighter local day. Avoid changing accommodation on the same day as a major mountain visit or a long cross-country transfer.
For important monasteries, museums, walks or coastal activities, confirm current opening and access directly. Keep one alternative that does not depend on the same weather or road.
Each outline focuses on compatible regions instead of trying to cover every part of Bulgaria.
