Rhodes with kids: where to stay and what to do

Rhodes works best with children when you pick one calm base and take short day trips out. We compared seven bases for families and parking, and rated every place below for strollers, babies, effort and heat, so you can plan the beach days and the sightseeing days around your family.

Rhodes has EasyRoad's reviewed local coverage: these bases and places are checked by the EasyRoad team. Opening hours, prices, access and drive times are not live; confirm with operators before you go.

East coast for easy beach days, Rhodes Town for sightseeing

The two coasts of Rhodes feel very different with children. The east has the long sandy beaches with shallow entry and the main family resorts. The west is windy, with mostly pebbly beaches that do not suit small children, but it has the ancient sites, castles and mountain villages.

Rhodes Town is the place to be without a car: the medieval city, the Palace and the Archaeological Museum are on foot, and the airport transfer is short. Its cobbled lanes are hard with a stroller, though, and driving and parking in the Old Town are restricted. Many families stay on the east coast and visit the town for a day.

Plan around heat, steps and wind

Several of the island's highlights are exposed or stepped. The Acropolis of Lindos is a long stepped climb, Monte Smith has almost no shade, and Ancient Kamiros is open ground. Put them early in the day and keep the hot middle of the day for the beach, a shaded valley or an indoor visit.

Lindos fills with day visitors around midday, so arrive early or late. Kritinia and Monolithos castles have unfenced drops and steep exposed climbs; keep children close or skip them with toddlers.

Wind shapes the beach plan. Prasonisi is a windsurfing centre with strong currents, and the west coast is often windy. For calm water, head to the sheltered east-coast bays.

Practical Rhodes notes for families

  • Car or no car. Rhodes Town and the coast road from Ixia to Faliraki have the most frequent buses. In the south and on the west coast a car is effectively required.
  • Strollers. Mandraki Harbour is a flat promenade; the Old Town's cobbles and Lindos' stepped lanes are hard going. A baby carrier helps for the sights.
  • Shade and water. Bring hats and water for open archaeological sites. Water shoes help on rocky bays such as Anthony Quinn Bay.
  • High season. Faliraki and the most popular beaches are very crowded in July and August. Early starts make the day calmer.
  • Operator checks. Confirm opening times and access directly with the site or operator; EasyRoad does not show live opening information.

Rhodes with kids: questions

Where is the best place to stay in Rhodes with small children?
In EasyRoad's reviewed coverage, Kolymbia & Afandou and Kallithea & Faliraki are the strongest family bases. Kolymbia & Afandou is calmer and central for day trips both north and south; Kallithea & Faliraki has the widest sandy beaches close to Rhodes Town but is busier and louder in high season.
Which Rhodes beaches suit young children?
Tsambika Beach and Agathi Beach are rated good for babies and strollers, with shallow entry and usually calm water. St Paul's Bay below Lindos is sheltered for careful family swimming. Prasonisi and the windy, pebbly west coast are not a calm family swim.
Is Lindos a good base with a stroller?
Lindos is beautiful but its lanes are steep and stepped, cars stay in car parks outside the village, and the acropolis is a long stepped climb. With a stroller, stay elsewhere and visit Lindos early in the day, or consider Pefkos next door.
Do you need a car on Rhodes with kids?
From Rhodes Town you can see the medieval city and museums on foot and use the island bus hub. For the southern beaches, Kiotari & Gennadi or the west coast, a car is effectively required. Old Town driving and parking is restricted.
What can families do on a very hot or rainy day?
The Archaeological Museum and the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Town are indoors, and Seven Springs is a shaded, cool valley. Leave exposed sites such as Monte Smith, Ancient Kamiros and the Acropolis of Lindos for early mornings.
What does EasyRoad cover on Rhodes?
Rhodes has EasyRoad's reviewed local coverage: the bases and places on this page are checked by the EasyRoad team and used when the app builds your days. EasyRoad does not provide live opening, access, price or availability information; confirm important details with operators.
